Spring Break is Here

Thus far, it’s a busy one!  I’ve got a lot to do, both for school and for my own personal endeavors.  Nobody really cares about studying for Pre-Calc and Anatomy & Physiology, but I do need to spend some time reviewing all those tiny holes we have in our heads.  (No, really, we do…your foramen magnum is huge!)

I checked out a pretty awesome book from the library called “Musculoskeletal Inverventions: Techniques for Therapeutic Exercise.”  Now, on top of all of my real course work, I doubt that I’ll be able to get through it by the summer, but hopefully nobody is as proactively self-educational [totally made that up] as me, so I’ll be able to check it out over and over again.  Learning is so fun!

I‘ve been excited about spring break for a few reasons.  Firstly, I needed some time to relax, and it’s been nice not having to wake up at 6am.  I planned on getting outside alot, mostly to the driving range to work on my game, except the weather people have decided it’s a good idea to schedule rain since Friday night.  I’ve had it with this rain!!  The Master’s is next week, and it would be nice to have played a few times so I can learn while I watch.  Seeing the pro’s play and hearing commentary is great for teaching you about the game, and I find that it helps with my caddying too.  And while I’m talking about golf, let me call two things.  Tiger Woods is going to add to his collection of green jackets, because he’s that good.  Forget about his personal life; he’s the most dominant athlete of our lives.

Now, as good as Tiger is, on and apparently off the course, I’m not sure if I’d want to play around with him.  I’d take over for Steve Williams and carry his bag any day, but if I was going to play 18 with any pro of my choice, I’d go with Paula Creamer.  And by play 18 holes, I mean marry.

Now; since I’ve been starting each of my work outs with foam rolling and mobility work, I’ve been making tons of progress with the way that I feel and move, as well as with the weights I put up.  Example:  Put 25lbs on my squat in a month.  Not going to complain about that!  Well, I usually hear some kind of comment along the lines of ‘What the hell are you doing?’ whenever I’m on my roller or warming up, usually from some meat head or the people that think that using the elliptical for half an hour and then doing crunches is an effective workout. (Oh, wait, you mean to tell me that it isn’t?!  Drat!)

I’ve gotten used to these judgment filled questions, but recently I’ve been getting used to something cooler, which is other people using foam rollers and doing mobility drills!  Now, I think its pretty cool that people are eating their words about how dumb something looks when they realize how easy and effective it is, and the wonders that it can do for them.  So get a foam roller people!!  I won’t even begin to get into why they’re awesome for you.

I’ve been making  conscious effort to get more fruits and vegetables in my diet.  While I doubt that I’ll be sitting down with a salad anytime soon, I’ve been making some pretty cool discoveries about what I actually like and don’t.  For example, I figure out how to make truly green eggs using spinach and a blender.  Once I can find some good Ham, I’ll repeat and take some pictures.  A discovery that I’ve made recently is that raisins are the perfect snack when you want to satisfy a sweet tooth while eating something that’s a real food and not laboratory concocted.  Well, today while walking the aisles of BJ’s with my mom (Hi, Mom!) I found a pretty cool snack.  From the Canadian company Brookside Farms, comes an awesome açaí and blueberry mix, each covered in some pretty dark chocolate. The combination is a lucious, thick, chewy snack, that’s pretty good for you!  Now, I know you’re thinking since they’re so good it must be really easy to over-eat them, and let me tell you; after eating just ten pieces, I was totally stuffed.  A pretty awesome discovery, I’d say.  Brookside also makes a pomegranate version, and I’ll be sure to pick that up next.

Now, as much as I love eating and exercising and not sitting still, that’s is what I’m about to go do.  I have yet to read the 7th book in the Harry Potter series, and I thought spring break would be a good time to do so.  Yes, I’d like to read it, but on Sunday I started “…Half Blood Prince”, in order to refresh my memory.  J.K. Rowling is a fantastic author, and re-reading the book a number of years later shows me some of her intricate details which I missed the first time.  I’m off to continue with that big, because it’s still raining out, I have no car, and I can’t really do anything else.  I’ll leave you with one of my favorite quotes from the series, and from life in general.

“And now Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.”
